A rising country music star described as “the next Garth Brooks” died in an accidental shooting with a gun that was being used as a prop in a music video.
Justin Carter recently signed with Triple Threat Management and was spending much of his time recording music.
“Justin had a potential to, you know, in our eyes, and a lot of people’s eyes to be the next Garth Brooks,” Mark Atherton with Triple Threat told ABC 13.
Atherton said that a gun that was slated to be used in a music video shoot was the same one that killed Carter at his Houston apartment. The exact date of his death wasn’t clear.
Friends and family said that the country music singer was spending much of his time recording at Enclave Recording Studios.
“His music was his world,” said Carter’s mother, Cindy McClellan. “He was always there for everybody.”
According to Carter’s website, he was working on a solo album and was booking tour dates for later this year.
He had recently released two singles and written 25 songs in the last two months.
It described him as “a Texas born and Texas raised country boy to his core.”

His influences included Brooks, George Strait, and Clay Walker.
“Justin’s passion is derived from the sound of old country, and he clings to that feeling he gets when he hears it and tries to push that into his music,” the bio read. “Times are changing and so are the generations taste in music, but Justin tries to keep a happy medium between both old and new to satisfy everyone.”
According to a Carter fan page, his mother is working on approval for a military funeral for the veteran. “This was ruled as an unfortunate accident. A great loss for our family. He will be missed but will forever be in our hearts,” McLellan added on the page.
Friends posted tributes to the deceased singer on Facebook.
Jamie Scott Ruckman, a close friend, was among those responding to the death.
“People giving me issues because when I’m live now playing Justin’s music, I mute the part of the gun going off in the song. If no one can understand that it makes me very emotional and I don’t want to show that side of me on his pages. He always asked me to be positive & that’s what imma do,” he wrote on Facebook.
“It’s harder for me to cope because he was like a real brother I never had. I was very close, called each other almost every 1-2 hours a day thru the night. I’m sorry I can’t please you all, but I’m hurting In so many ways. Hope someone understands.”
