The pandemic lockdowns have exacerbated the delay of court cases coming to trial. Figures from June show there was a record high of over 60,000 outstanding Crown Court cases and around six times that number in magistrates’ courts. According to Whitehall, the criminal courts backlog could remain “a problem for many years.”
