Two mountaineers hiking Olperer in the Zillertal Alps in Austria gained a new companion along their way. A goat named Gretl joined them on the way up, and then realized the descent was too hard.
Gretl, the little goat, decided to join the two mountaineers scaling the 11,404-foot tall mountain, according to The Dodo.
The hikers were making their way up when they noticed a shadow following them.
At first, they tried to get the little goat to turn around, but when that failed, they decided to keep an eye on Gretl as they all made their way up the mountain.
However, while the three all made their way up successfully, once at the top, Gretl decided to go a different way down.
The hikers tried to get Gretl to go with them, but the little goat decided to be adventurous and set off on her own route.
Soon, the little goat was out of sight and stood little chance of surviving long, stranded out in the cold.

A day or more after Gretl got stranded, a gondola operator spotted the little goat near the top of the mountain and contacted tourist information center Tux-Finkenberg for help.
Tux-Finkenberg sent out a 4-person rescue team in search of the little goat.
“Probably one of the most unusual [jobs] Tux Mountain Rescue ever had,” they wrote on Facebook.

The rescue team scaled the mountain searching for the little goat.
Once they found Gretl, they carried her down the mountain. They weren’t going to risk her setting off on her own again.
While the trek was long, the rescue was successful.
After the most perilous part of the descent, Gretl also got a ride in the gondola.
Once safe, the rescue team paused so that Gretl could appreciate the view.

When at last Gretl made it safely back down, the rescue team even had a leafy meal waiting.

Gretl was placed with a young caregiver to regain her strength while Tux-Finkenberg set about finding her owners.
Tux-Finkenberg shared photos of Gretl on their Facebook page and it wasn’t long before her owner came forward and the two were united.
While it is unclear why the little goat joined the mountaineers, the kindness of all involved resulted in a happy ending.
