Cyber Monday Continues the Shift to Online Shopping

For those who missed Black Friday or simply don’t want to wait in lines, retailers are trying lap up the last consumers they can get with a spate of Cyber Monday deals. A survey estimates that 122 million Americans are going to take bargains on phones, computers, TVs, and other tech products. Also popular is fashion and apparel.

During the Black Friday weekend, over 150 million people took part in the events, and while online sales are making up an increasing share, many still went out to shop.

Some waited for days in advance, like these shoppers at a Best Buy electronics store in New Jersey.

“We been here since Tuesday, Tuesday night,” said shopping enthusiast Luciana Pindleton.

There’s none of that on Cyber Monday, which started up in 2005 as a way for smaller retailers to get better access to the Black Friday market. The online promotion events represent the retail market’s growing share of sales from the internet, where large department stores like Walmart and Target are trying to win more market share from websites like Amazon.

Most offers expire on Monday, but some sellers are keeping their bargains in action longer for a head start into the holiday shopping season.
