A father of two from Orlando, Florida got into a pair of super short shorts in order to teach his 14-year-old daughter a lesson about modesty in fashion, according to Today.
Jason Hilley, the father of daughter Kendall and son Walker, walked into his daughter’s room with a pair of Daisy Duke shorts that he made by cutting up a pair of jeans, according to the media outlet.
The 39-year-old father posted the interaction with his daughter on Facebook, along with a video filmed by his wife, Alison, and captioned the post with, “you wear yours out in public? I will wear mine! Parenting 101,” and tagged his wife in the post.
In the video, Hilley could be seen walking into his daughter’s room with his handmade Daisy Dukes on to make a statement about how short her shorts were.
“Kendall, we have to talk,” the father could be seen saying, as he made his way into his daughter’s room, inquiring about her short shorts.
He asked her to also put on her own pair of shorts, and while Kendall was reluctant, she eventually did and the two posed for a photo which was also included in Hilley’s Facebook post.
“I’m picking her up from school with these on,” Hilley said, according to the Facebook video.
Hilley was also seen asking his wife behind the camera whose shorts were shorter, and Alison erupted into a fit of laughter while telling him that both shorts were equally as short.
“These aren’t even that short,” Kendall could be seen saying in the video, and Hilley responded with, “No, neither are mine,” and the entire family bursts into another fit of laughter.
The post went viral and garnered a lot of attention from viewers who praised Hilley for his parenting and called him a good father, according to Today. The post received more than 20,000 reactions, more than 10,000 comments, and was shared more than 230,000 times. The video was viewed more than 43 million times.
It all started when Hilley thought his daughter’s shorts were too short one day and asked her to use his card to purchase a pair of shorts that were a little longer, according to Today.
“I said, ‘Kendall, take my debit card and buy yourself shorts that fit,'” Hilley told Today. He said that his daughter did what he asked, but when she tried to leave the house one day with what he thought was her old shorts—the ones that Hilley thought showed too much skin—he was left very confused.
He told Today that he asked his daughter why she wasn’t wearing the new shorts that she bought, and she responded by saying that the ones she was wearing were, in fact, her new pair of shorts. Instead of buying longer shorts, she ended up buying shorts that appeared just as short as the ones Hilley specifically asked her not to wear.
However, instead of turning the situation into a screaming match or punishing her for it, he decided he was going to go at it with a bit of humor—provided that he got the point across. He told Today that both his children don’t embarrass easily, and said, “Kendall is a cheerleader and asks me to do routines with her in our front yard. It’s quite a sight.”
However, despite not embarrassing easily, Kendall seemed like she understood what her father was saying, by the looks of the video.
“We joke around a lot, but Kendall knows when my jokes are serious,” Hilley told Today. “Kids will be kids and try to push the limits. That’s when I step in and try to correct the behavior with a little bit of humor. You don’t have to yell and scream and punish to get a point across.”
