Police are investigating a homicide involving a teenager who was shot dead by a homeowner in Washington, D.C. on Saturday. The boy was reportedly breaking into vehicles in the local neighborhood.

According to a statement from the Metropolitan Police Department, the shooting occurred just before 4 a.m. in the 1000 block of Quincy Street, close to Brookland Middle School and Turkey Thicket Recreation Center, in Northeast D.C.

Investigators arrived at the scene to find 13-year-old Karon Blake with gunshot wounds. Upon arrival, police found the unidentified homeowner performing CPR on the boy.

Police said the man had shot the boy several times, after confronting him for breaking into multiple vehicles in the nearby area. Blake was immediately rushed to hospital where he later died from his injuries.

Blake was a student at Brookland Middle School, according to FOX 5.

Police have yet to release specific details about the case but added there was no evidence the boy was armed, and they are not aware of who made the 911 call.

According to investigators, the homeowner’s firearm is legally registered. They also confirmed that the man is cooperating with authorities.

Police also found a previously stolen car on Quincy Street, which they believe was used by Blake. Two other juveniles are said to have also been involved, after neighbors reported that two teens attempted to flee by car but ended up escaping on foot through an alley.

It is currently not clear whether the homeowner will face charges.

Authorities are asking anyone with information on the case to contact the Metropolitan Police Department on 202-727-9099 or send a text tip to 50411.
