Defense Secretary Jim Mattis met in Copenhagen, Denmark, on May 9 with representatives of a dozen allied nations to coordinate efforts to defeat ISIS in the Mideast and around the world.

Speaking at a press conference with Danish Defense Minister Claus Hjort Frederiksen after the meeting, Mattis said, “We’re going to further accelerate this fight and to free the people currently suffering from Daesh’s crushing occupation and our enemy’s terror threat to Europe and beyond.”

Much of the world calls ISIS, “Daesh,” he said.

Mattis confirmed the U.S. commitment to NATO and specifically to Article 5, which ensures that a threat to one NATO nation will be treated as a threat to all.

Mattis concluded by saying, “We stand together minister, visible and indivisible, in the face of any threats to international law or to a peaceful international order.”
