Defense Secretary Jim Mattis is in Australia for the Australia-United States Ministerial Consultations (AUSMIN) conference.
This high-level meeting will also include Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.
He traveled from Singapore where he made some powerful promises.
Mattis said the United States would oppose Chinese expansion in the South China Sea.
Australia is a big trading partner with China. Its support on this issue would be a significant gain.
