Deputy attorney general says special prosecutor has full independence

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein spoke before the Senate Commerce, Justice, and Science Appropriations Subcommittee on June 13.

The deputy AG stated clearly that special counsel Robert Mueller was completely independent.

Further he assured the committee that in the legal chain of command only the Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who is recused from the investigation, and himself, Rod Rosenstein, had the authority to fire the special counsel.

“I’m not going to follow any orders unless I believe those are lawful and appropriate orders,” Rosenstein told the committee.

Rosenstein assured the senators that he would “defend the integrity of that investigation.”
