Doctor performs ‘surgery’ on toys to make young patients recover faster

A surgeon treating children knows how to help his patients best. Dr. Travis Groth goes the extra mile and treats and operates his patient’s’ toys the same way as he treats them.

At the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, Dr. Travis’s patients are generally accompanied by their stuffed friends when they fall sick or get injured.
Travis and his team of doctors give the stuffed accomplices the same treatment as the actual patient so that the children have something to relate to. This aids their recovery process and helps them retain childhood even when in hospital.

Travis has been doing this since long but it’s only recently that his hospital captured him operating upon a patient’s stuffed toy and shared it on social media. It then went viral.
According to hospital’s blog, it refers to working this way with their patients as “100 % kids”. “It means understanding that kids aren’t just small adults and tailoring care specifically for the unique needs of a small, growing body. And it means respecting their childhood and treating them like kids.” the blog explained.

Many of his older patients who have now grown up and parents of patients have shared similar experiences on Facebook. Watch the Inside Edition video below for more on the story:
