Surgeons say that 27 contact lenses were found in a woman’s eye while they prepared for cataract surgery, according to a report from the British Medical Journal.
The operation took place in November 2016, but it was recently detailed by the medical journal.
The lenses resembled a “blueish mass” in the 67-year-old woman’s eye. They were causing her discomfort, which she thought was caused by her old age, reports said. The Journal noted that “she had no previous ocular complaints” and the mass was found during “routine cataract surgery.”
“None of us have ever seen this before,” Rupal Morjaria, who is with the Solihull Hospital near Birmingham, U.K., told Optometry Today.
“It was such a large mass. All the 27 contact lenses were stuck together. We were really surprised that the patient didn’t notice it because it would cause quite a lot of irritation while it was sitting there,” Morjaria said.
The woman, who was not identified, had been wearing mostly disposable contact lenses for about 35 years but didn’t attend regular appointments.
“She was quite shocked. When she was seen two weeks after I removed the lenses she said her eyes felt a lot more comfortable,” Morjaria added. “Because she had harbored these contact lenses in her eye for an unknown length of time, if we had operated she would have had a lot of bacteria around her conjunctiva,” she noted.
