Where there is a tragedy, there is always hope. The story of Dayko the rescue dog could not be a greater proof of that. The city of Ibarra, just north of Ecuador, experienced 7.8-degree earthquake this year. The following week was an intense, all-out rescue mission to save all they could who were trapped in the aftermath.  There were many victims and many heroes.

Among the heroes of this South American country is a very special dog named Dayko. Dayko belonged to the Ibarra Fire Department where he was trained to serve in many types of disaster. The unit that Dayko worked with saved many lives and even managed to save the battered coastal province of Pedernales, in large part due to the efforts of this incredible rescue dog.

After a grueling week of search and rescue, Dayko died of exhaustion. Man’s best friend gave people hope in the face of tragedy and gave his life so others could have theirs. Rest in peace, Dayko, and thank you.
