On Aug. 1, Hemi, a black pitbull-labrador mix, woke up his family at 4:30 a.m.—their trailer home was on fire.

Chelsye Mason grabbed her baby girl, Dakota, and ran out, while her fiancé, Vernon Brower, rushed to wake up his brother, Gary.

Brower managed to get his brother out, but suffered severe burns and was taken to a hospital.

Hemi, however, didn’t make it.

“I tried to get him to follow me out the back door and I left it open,” Mason wrote on Facebook, “but we believe he tried to follow Vern when he went down to the other end of the house through the flames to wake Gary up.”

The family’s three cats are missing too.

It is not clear what caused the fire in the Naples, Maine, neighborhood.

Brower was treated with burns to 40 percent of his body, and doctors are considering skin grafts, Mason wrote. “He’s very upset especially about his cats and Hemi. He’s blaming himself about Hemi saying he should have saved him.”

Two fundraising pages were set up to help the family recover.
