HARTFORD, Connecticut — Police are investigating the death of a dog that was chained outside a Connecticut home in the bitter cold and found frozen inside its doghouse on New Year’s Day.

Hartford police said that a concerned neighbor reported that a pit bull mix had been left outside during the bitter cold weather. Officers arrived the scene at approximately 6:30 pm on Monday, Jan. 1, 2018. When they arrived, the dog was deceased and frozen solid.

The dog appeared to be young, possibly less than 3 years of age, according to the police report.

Hartford police say the dog might have been outside for as long as a month before it was discovered by police. They say the dog’s owner has been in jail for months on drug charges and claimed to have made arrangements for the dog’s care.
