Drone captures rare Cuvier’s whales on video

Five extremely rare Cuvier’s beaked whales were filmed by a drone from the Sea Shepherd’s research vessel.

Five whales—a mother and calf and three others—were filmed.

Cuvier’s whales are among the most elusive. These rare cetaceans dive deeper and longer than any other mammal. The dive to 10,000 feet and stay down for up to two hours. They spend only minutes on the surface. This makes them exceedingly hard to study.

The Sea Shepherd research vessel R/V Martin Sheen is patrolling around Guadalupe Island off Mexico’s coast.

The drone came from a Sea Shepherd’s research vessel. The vessel is tracking whales via sonar and drones.

Guadalupe Island is thought to be a breeding ground for beaked whales.
