An avalanche struck a North Tokyo ski resort where a school group was climbing. Eight students are feared dead. Two students are in critical condition. The group consisted of 52 students and 11 teachers.

Avalanche warnings were already in place after recent days of heavy snowfall. Rescue workers and helicopters have had their efforts hampered by bad weather.
