The United States and the European Union announced a new partnership to reduce the continent’s reliance on Russian energy, a step top officials characterised as the start of a years-long initiative to further isolate Moscow after its invasion of Ukraine. The United States will supply the bloc with more liquefied natural gas (LNG), as EU leaders met to deal with an energy crunch triggered by the war. The European Union is aiming to cut its dependency on Russian gas by two-thirds this year. Russia supplies around 40 percent of Europe’s gas needs.
