The season of giving is falling upon us.

But for some crooks, it’s also the season of taking what’s not theirs.

Right now, the Better Business Bureau (BBB), a non-profit organization with a vision to build trust between buyer and sellers, is warning people to beware of a gift exchange scheme making its way on social media.

“The Secret Sister Gift Exchange” promises participants will receive up to 36 gifts if they buy and send one $10 gift. Users are encouraged to invite others to participate.

However, according to BBB, the “secret sister gift exchange” is an illegal pyramid scheme.

“This is a pyramid scheme it doesn’t seem like that first and the most important thing is it’s illegal,” says Claire Rosenzweig, the President and CEO of the BBB of Metropolitan New York. “You might be helping a scammer with their attempts at identity theft.”

“Scammers they feed on emotional hooks the emotional hook here is the holiday season,” says Claire Rosenzweig.
