Big Ben is undergoing repairs in London. The repairs will take three years, and is the clock’s biggest repair job to date.

Popularly known as Big Ben, its official name is actually Elizabeth Tower. It was named in honor of Queen Elizabeth II; Big Ben is actually the name of the clock’s largest bell.

Big Ben rings at the top of each hour, while four smaller bells mark each respective quarter of the hour.

Although the clock has been running continuously since 1859 it will have to halt operation for several months while its spring is changed and hands removed.
