Fans remembered Penny Marshall, who played an endearingly graceless character with a thick Bronx accent in U.S. television’s “Laverne & Shirley,” at her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Dec. 18.

The actress and pioneering film director with hits including “Big” and “A League of Their Own,” died on Dec. 17 at 75, her publicist said the following day.

“I remember meeting her over at the Equestrian Center and she was just as funny at the Equestrian Center as she was on her television shows,” said David Hunt, who was originally from Tennessee and lives in Los Angeles. “Laverne and Shirley was just simply amazing. So I just really appreciated her.”

“Good memories. She was a very comedic person and it seemed like she had a good energy, so yeah, it’s sad,” said Stuart Jewett.

Marshall played the unrefined but lovable Laverne DeFazio on “Laverne & Shirley,” a situation comedy that ran on the ABC network from 1976 to 1983, following the lives of two single women and their nutty friends in the 1950s and ’60s in Milwaukee.

Marshall, the younger sister of successful TV and film director and producer Garry Marshall, turned to directing after her series ended. Her first film was the underwhelming 1986 Whoopi Goldberg comedy “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” but that was followed by the charming 1988 hit “Big,” starring fellow former TV sitcom star Tom Hanks.

She had one daughter, Tracy Reiner, who is also an actress.
