Farmers Market re-opens 16 years later after 9/11 forced it’s closure

New York—These farmers are walking pieces of history.

Greenmarket Farmers Market re-opened 16 years later after 9/11 forced it’s closure.

On 9/11, the market was so close to the buildings that farmers who were there still remember the scene.

Ron Samascott, owner of Samascott Orchards said he was frozen when he heard the first crash.

“I was scared I thought run but I had all the tents set up and I couldn’t see where anything was so I didn’t know what to do I was just frozen then I heard a crash and looked out and saw the tower.”

5 farmers from that day are now back selling fruits and veggies.

Tom Strumolo, Former director of Greenmarket returned back to the same location filled with emotion.

“The emotion you feel on a day like today is for people, the people who were here that day who went through the experience together and somehow managed to stay united as a group and then emerge out of it through a lot of hard individual and collective effort.”

The original Greenmarket was first established in 1984.

Reporter:

The first day of Greenmarkets re-opening brings many visitors here. They all enjoyed the organic fresh fruit and produce presented.

All the farmers are looking forward to what the future brings.

Kernie Jernan, farmer

“I just feel happy to be back and we’re going to just see how it goes and go week to week and hopefully we get to see a lot of people that we used to see down here, that would be great.”
