Father and daughter bonding time with make-up classes

Putting on make-up is harder than it looks.

A Manhattan Salon is helping fathers spend some quality bonding time with their daughters.

Blushington Makeup and Beauty Lounge is offering classes for dads and daughters to learn about applying age-appropriate makeup and skincare.

Last weeks Sunday class was especially meaningful, as it fell perfectly on Father’s Day. Three dads and their daughters gathered at the salon.

“Makeup is something that these young ladies at some point as teenagers start to want to learn how to apply makeup and I think dad should also get involved. I’m very nervous, I’m extremely nervous, but I think I’ll be fine, it will be fun,” said Valerio Rodriguez, one of the dads.

Rodriguez’s daughter, Leila, was quick to give some words of encouragement.

“I’m ready to accept whatever he does, I know he’s just a beginner. … I love him and no matter what he does to my face today I will still love him, and I hope he has a happy Father’s Day with me,” said Leila.

Jimmy Leon, another dad with four children says he hopes the lesson will make things easier on his wife, who may not always have time to help.

“As a family of four we are always running around on the weekend and mom is stuck with the baby so I’m left doing the other stuff. If I can give a good hand in applying make-up later on, if I know how to do that, it will be perfect,” Leon said.

Leon’s daughter, Sabrina, was straightforward about her expectations: “Make sure you do good because I want to look beautiful,” she said.

The $50 classes at Blushington help dads master lipstick application, skincare and makeup skills.

Blushington regional manager Jessica Hill also said the classes help the girls and their fathers understand age-appropriate makeup.

“There’s so many influences out there now with makeup for young girls that maybe steering them in the wrong direction,” she said. “So we thought we could bring it back, make it fun, age-appropriate, interactive and steer them in the right direction.”

By the end of the 90 minute class, the dads seem to be much more relieved.

“I feel complete, I’m not nervous anymore. The hardest part for me I think was the lips,” said Rodriguez.

His daughter Sabrina, ended up surprised by her father’s skills and gave him a rating of 8.5 out of 10.

“I think he did way better than I thought he was going to do. He’s a very good listener. He didn’t make as many mistakes as I thought he would, I’m very proud of him,” she said.

Meanwhile, Chris Fuentes said the class also served as a great way to bond with his daughter.

“It’s an awesome way to spend Father’s Day and just a great opportunity to spend time with my daughter and learn something new that I never thought I would learn. Just having time to spend with your daughter is a priceless thing,” he said.

The classes at Blushington salon are located on the Upper East Side at 1195 Lexington Avenue and run throughout the month of June.
