JACKSON, Michigan—Prosecutors say a man intentionally shot and wounded his 2-year-old son in the face during a fight with the boy’s mother in southern Michigan.

The Jackson Citizen Patriot reports 32-year-old Michael Glance of Jackson County’s Blackman Township was arraigned by video on Thursday, July 18, on charges including assault with intent to murder.

Court records didn’t list a defense lawyer.

Jackson County prosecutors say Glance held a handgun to his son’s head during an argument on April 16 and squeezed the trigger, but it didn’t fire.

Assistant Prosecutor Kati Rezmierski says the mother tried to flee with the child, but Glance followed them with a shotgun and “blew half of his face off” as the child sat in a car seat.

Glance then started chasing the boy’s mother with his malfunctioning handgun, trying to get the gun to work, before fleeing the scene, Rezmierski added.

The Jackson Citizen reported that authorities located and arrested Glance on McCain Road, west of Robinson Road.

He faces up to life in prison if convicted on the assault with intent to murder charge, according to the Daily Mail.

Rezmierski said he had no criminal record but there were several instances of unreported domestic violence.

His bond has been set at $10 million.

Multiple Surgeries

The boy, identified as Ryker, was hospitalized in critical but stable condition. He has undergone multiple surgeries.

Domestic Violence

Anyone affected by domestic violence, including friends and family members concerned about a loved one, can receive confidential help, advice, information or crisis intervention by calling the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 or visiting the website thehotline.org, which offers a live chat service.

More than 12 million people in the United States victims of rape, physical violence, or stalking by an intimate partner—24 people per minute, according to the National Domestic Violence Hotline.

“One in 4 women (24.3 percent) and 1 in 7 men (13.8 percent) aged 18 and older in the United States have been the victim of severe physical violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime,” it reported.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), intimate partner violence affects millions of people in the United States each year. Intimate partner violence (IPV) is defined as violence or aggression that occurs in a close relationship, usually perpetrated by current and former spouses and dating partners.
