Authorities are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying a suspect accused of throwing a “soda can-sized mortar” at officers during a recent George Floyd protest in North Carolina.

The incident happened on May 30, in Uptown Charlotte. An 11-year officer from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) suffered second-degree burns following the explosion.

The explosive appeared to be a firework-type mortar. The officer’s clothing caught fire and he was struck by shrapnel and lost hearing for two days, police said.

“This third-generation cop’s clothing caught fire, he sustained second-degree burns, was struck in the face and arm with shrapnel, and lost hearing for two days,” CMPD officials wrote on Facebook. “Despite his injuries, he pushed through the pain and worked the remainder of his 14-hour shift.”

A video clip of body camera footage of the May 30 incident was released last week. Showing the moment the mortal exploded.

“Please help us identify the suspect so no more officers or community members are victimized by the suspect. You can leave information about this anonymously with [Crime Stoppers] and earn a reward of up to $1,000,” CMPD wrote in the caption of the video.

The FBI said anyone with information is encouraged to call the department at 704-672-6100 or Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.

Authorities added it is also possible to contact your local FBI office, or the nearest American Embassy or Consulate.
