Feeling worthy of doing a meaningful job made the day for this boy with cerebral palsy

Often times, people young and old, feel neglected, worthless, and unwanted only because they are not able to prove their worth to the world. Being of some use to society, to their family and friends makes life worth living. Read on how this check-out counter lady helped this boy with cerebral palsy feel absolutely elated.

Grocery stores are not just places where you go for picking up your household requirements.  Of course, you can order grocery online, but that is no fun at all! Many a family considers visiting grocery shops as their social outing; meeting people, looking around, inspecting newly arrived goods, the smell of the freshly arrived vegetables, sometimes simply pick up things that are really not required – just for fun.

Jeanie Robinson had recently moved to California with her family from Germany and was adapting and settling into the new city. Visiting the grocery store along with her son Alan, was an outing they both looked forward to. Alan was a young 14-year-old boy, who suffered from cerebral palsy. Alan particularly liked helping his mother in whatever way he could at the grocery store, and that would make him real proud of himself.  He would push the cart around the store until it got too heavy for him to manage. Basically, that’s all he could do.

When they reached the check-out counter, the cashier, impressed with Andy’s contagious smile, asked him if he would like to scan the grocery items. Alan found it hard to believe and looked at his mom.  Jeanie had to repeat twice for him to believe the offer was genuine.

The grin on Andy’s face lasted the rest of the day. It was an extremely kind gesture on the part of the cashier, making him feel worthy of doing such a responsible job and giving him the opportunity to be useful in some way. It also made Jeanie feel that the new community had accepted them.  They no longer felt like outsiders in a new city.

Watch the video to witness how happy Alan actually felt, throughout the process that the cashier helped him scan the various items.

Such a simple gesture but it had such a profound impact on a little boy’s life and his family.
