First Victim of Deadly NYC Helicopter Crash Identified

The five people who were killed in a helicopter crash just off the Manhattan shore over the weekend have been identified. Two were a Dallas firefighter and his friend.

The chopper went down late Sunday with five passengers and one pilot into New York City’s East River.

The pilot was the only survivor.

As federal authorities investigate the cause of the crash, NBC reported that Dallas firefighter Brian McDaniel, 26, was one of the victims.

Dallas Fire-Rescue spokesman Jason Evans confirmed with the broadcaster that McDaniel had worked there for nearly two years before his sudden death.

“Despite his short tenure, hearts are heavy with grief as we not only try to come to grips with his loss departmentally; but to also be there in every way that we can for his family,” said Evans.

McDaniel’s longtime friend Trevor Cadigan, also 26, was one of the others who died.

His father said he moved to New York City in October to work at Business Insider.

“We were devastated to hear about the death of Trevor Cadigan. Trevor was an intern at Business Insider until a few weeks ago,” the magazine said in a statement.

“He was a smart, talented, and ambitious young journalist and producer who was well-liked and made a big contribution. Our hearts go out to his family and friends.”

Cadigan posted a video to his Instagram account from the helicopter as it took off from Kearny, New Jersey.

The pair went to Bishop Lynch High School together and both graduated in 2010.

McDaniel was visiting his friend in the city for some sightseeing.

The helicopter was part of a company that gives aerial tours of Manhattan.

A police source told the New York Daily News that the other three victims were Carla Vallejos Blanco, a tourist from Argentina, and two helicopter employees, Tristan Hill and Daniel Thompson.
