Fish swim in the streets in south Florida after heavy rain and flooding

South Florida is experiencing heavy rains and flooding. The flooding is so severe that fish are swimming in the streets.

Residents say flooded yards have become ponds.

“There’s literally fish all around everybody’s yard, I’m just glad there aren’t alligators floating around,” said local resident Steve Kroll.

It’s currently hurricane season there, and rainstorms are common. However, current flooding is worse than usual.

“When you step out the door, as soon as you step off the steps, you’re 6 inches there and if you walk any further you’re up to your knees,” said Leo Fournier, another local resident.

Some areas have seen 10 (25.4 centimetres) or more inches of rain.

In Davie, west of Fort Lauderdale, officials recorded 10.28 inches (26 centimetres) of rain over a 48-hour period. Weston recorded 11 inches (28 centimetres) in that same time period.

The National Weather Service said more rainfall may be on the way for Miami-Dade County and in parts of Broward and Palm Beach counties.

There have been hundreds of delays at the Fort Lauderdale airport.

Miami International also experienced delays.
