The bodies of five hikers were found near Vancouver, B.C. Canadian police recovered four bodies on the morning of Sunday, April 9, a day after the hikers vanished. A fifth body was recovered later that afternoon.

The hikers went missing on Saturday at a popular trail on Mount Harvey in the Lion’s Bay area, about 20 miles north of Vancouver.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) received a distress call from a hiker regarding a collapsed cornice at the peak of Mount Harvey. The hiker spotted footprints leading to the summit and was concerned for the safety of anyone in the area.

A cornice is an overhanging mass of ice created by high winds and heavy snow. The ledge can easily collapse and is extremely dangerous to traverse.

The group of hikers plummeted about 1,640 feet when the cornice collapsed.
