In the middle of the night in China’s Shanxi Province, inside Jingping village, floodwaters breached a river embankment, guarded by local villagers.
The incident struck last week. In less than an hour, the overflow swept over the area’s last line of flood defense.
The top local official quickly sounded the alarm, urging residents to find high ground.
