“Everything collapsed, everybody’s house was collapsing and everything was falling in the houses that were down,” said one tearful survivor, holding a small child.
People have to wade through waist-deep water or ride boats.
Hillsides have collapsed, leaving waist-deep mud everywhere.
At least four people have died. Thousands are homeless.
A state of emergency has been declared in 14 cities.
President Michel Temer visited the afflicted areas. He promised federal aid.
The defense ministry has sent soldiers and helicopters to help in rescues.
