A Florida man who was hit in the head by a softball two weeks ago died on Sunday, Christmas Eve, according to local reports.

Greg Fusco, 37, died on Dec. 24—two weeks after he was knocked unconscious by a softball in Jacksonville, Florida, the Tampa Bay Times reported.

Specifically, he was hit in the left temple by the ball while he was pitching during a tournament on Dec. 2, the report said.

Fusco was knocked out by the hit, but he later regained consciousness before an ambulance arrived at the scene. Later, he was airlifted to the University of Florida Health Jacksonville for what doctors first believed were non-life-threatening injuries.

“His vitals looked good and he was able to squeeze his wife’s hand, so we did think he was going to make a recovery,” family friend Courtney Hinkle told WTSP.

He was rushed to surgery. His wife, Taylor, told the outlet that she believed his condition was improving.

“I was worried,” a friend, Taylor Lang, told the Times, “but I was confident.”

However, his condition got worse.

Fusco’s cause of death has yet to be determined. A GoFundMe set up for his family said that he suffered a blood clot, active bleeding, and a shattered skull when he was hit in the head with the ball.

He also suffered a head injury earlier in the morning of the accident, WTSP.

“He was the player everybody wanted on his team because he was a great guy,” said Mike Ogliaruso, a lieutenant for the Clearwater Police Department who used to play softball with Fusco, according to the Times.

According to NY Daily News, the couple married last month and had only just returned from their honeymoon when Fusco was hospitalized. His death occurred only two days before their one-month wedding anniversary.
