A Florida man who is unable to swim had to be rescued after jumping into a lake in an attempt to avoid arrest on Friday, January 18, the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office said.

Police said deputies approached 18-year-old Richard Garay after responding to suspicious activity near the intersection of Burnt Branch Circle and Greystone Lane in Sarasota at around 11 am.

Police said Garay fled the scene and jumped into a nearby lake, where he had to be rescued. He later admitted that he is unable to swim and entered the lake to avoid being arrested on several warrants, police added.

The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office released this footage of the rescue, which was filmed by its Aviation Unit, who were assisting the deputies. Police said Garay was charged with obstruction without violence and contempt of court for his outstanding warrants, and remained in custody at Sarasota County Jail.
