Foreign visitors traveling to the United States may soon face a new screening requirement that would require them to provide five years of social media history before being granted entry.

Tourists from countries participating in the Visa Waiver Program—which allows eligible travelers to visit the United States for up to 90 days without a visa by submitting an Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) application—would be included in the new screening mandate, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced on Wednesday in a notice posted to the Federal Register.

"In order to comply with the January 2025 Executive Order 14161 (Protecting the United States From Foreign Terrorists and Other National Security and Public Safety Threats), CBP is adding social media as a mandatory data element for an ESTA application," the notice <a href="https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2025/12/10/2025-22461/agency-information-collection-activities-revision-arrival-and-departure-record-form-i-94-and">reads</a>. "The data element will require ESTA applicants to provide their social media from the last 5 years."

Dozens of countries would be affected by the change, including European nations such as France, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland. Australia, Israel, Japan, South Korea, and Chile are also among the 42 participating countries in the <a href="https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/us-visas/tourism-visit/visa-waiver-program.html">Visa Waiver Program</a>.

The CBP also plans to update the ESTA application to require applicants to provide a picture of their face, also known as a "selfie," alongside their official passport photo, which would help verify in real time that the person applying online matches the photo in the passport.

"In addition, CBP intends to update the mobile application and require third party submissions to include a 'selfie' or photograph of the applicant's face," the notice reads. "These photos would be used to better ensure that the applicant is the rightful possessor of the document being used to obtain an ESTA authorization."

The proposed changes are not yet final. The public and affected agencies have until Feb. 9, 2026, to submit comments or suggestions before the CBP, in conjunction with the Department of Homeland Security, submits the notice to the Office of Management and Budget for review and approval.

The planned measures are in line with President Donald Trump's broader national security and border protection efforts.

On Dec. 4, Kristi Noem, the Secretary of Homeland Security, announced that the Trump administration intends to expand the U.S. travel ban to include more than 30 countries.

"I won't be specific on the number, but it's over 30. And the president is continuing to evaluate countries," Noem <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/video/6385998253112">said</a> during an appearance on Fox News' "The Ingraham Angle."

"If they don't have a stable government there, if they don't have a country that can sustain itself and tell us who those individuals are and help us vet them, why should we allow people from that country to come here to the United States?"

Trump <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/06/restricting-the-entry-of-foreign-nationals-to-protect-the-united-states-from-foreign-terrorists-and-other-national-security-and-public-safety-threats/">signed</a> a proclamation in June restricting entry for citizens of a dozen countries considered high-risk for national security, among them Afghanistan, the Republic of the Congo, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen. Entry for nationals of Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela was also partially limited.
