Former Italian PM Renzi regains party leadership with overwhelming win

Matteo Renzi made a political comeback after resigning as Italy’s prime minister, he easily regained the leadership of the Democratic Party (PD) with a 72 percent win on April 30. Nearly 2 million voters turned out for the primary election.

Renzi, 42, resigned less than five months ago after a national referendum that would reform Italy’s Constitution was rejected. Paolo Gentiloni, his foreign affairs minister, replaced him.

Renzi was planning a comeback after the defeat. His return now is just in time for Italy’s general election, which is scheduled to be held in early 2018.
