Seven people, including former NASCAR driver Greg Biffle and his family, were killed Thursday in a small-plane crash at a regional airport in North Carolina, authorities said.

The Statesville Regional Airport reported that an aircraft crashed while landing at around 10:15 a.m. local time. Local, state, and federal authorities responded to the scene. Flight records show the plane was registered to a company run by Biffle.

"We can confirm there has been an aircraft incident at the Statesville Regional Airport," the airport said in a statement on their Facebook page on Thursday. "At approximately 10:15 am, an aircraft crashed while landing. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is en route and will investigate the incident."

Biffle was on the plane with his wife, Cristina, and children Ryder and Emma, according to the highway patrol and a family statement. Others on the plane were identified as Dennis Dutton, his son Jack, and Craig Wadsworth.

“Each of them meant everything to us, and their absence leaves an immeasurable void in our lives,” the joint family statement said.

<a href="https://www.facebook.com/share/p/19gpv7zMMC/">Garrett Mitchell</a>, a Florida-based racing YouTuber who posts under the name Cleetus McFarland, said on Facebook that Biffle was en route to his racing facility when the plane crashed.

"Unfortunately, I can confirm Greg Biffle, his wife Cristina, daughter Emma, and son Ryder were on that plane…because they were on their way to spend the afternoon with us," Mitchell wrote. "We are devastated. I’m so sorry to share this."

<a href="https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=1749165872615267">Video from the incident</a> showed how the plane smashed trees, a roadway, a fence surrounding the airport, and gashed the runway before coming to a stop. The aircraft was shown engulfed in flames with a thick plume of smoke erupting from it.

The National Transportation Safety Board confirmed that its crews were arriving and said it would give updates on the crash by Friday.

"NTSB is launching a go team to investigate the fatal crash of a Cessna Citation C550 jet in Statesville, North Carolina," the <a href="https://x.com/NTSB_Newsroom/status/2001725943228903684?s=20">NTSB stated</a>. "The team expects to arrive on scene tonight and Member Michael Graham will be spokesperson on scene."

Data from flight tracker <a href="https://www.flightaware.com/live/flight/N257BW/history/20251218/1400Z/KSVH/KSVH">FlightAware</a> showed that the plane took off around 10:06 a.m. and flew in a loop before attempting to land on the runway again. The tail number of the plane involved is N257BW. <a href="https://registry.faa.gov/AircraftInquiry/Search/NNumberResult?nNumberTxt=257BW">FAA records</a> show that the plane is a Cessna C550, which belongs to a company called GB Aviation Leasing, whose listed address is in Mooresville, about 20 miles south of Statesville. The address on the company matches <a href="https://www.courthousenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/NASCAR-HIDDEN-CAMERA.pdf">court records</a> of a residential address belonging to Biffle.

Biffle was a NASCAR driver for 16 years. He won the 2001 NASCAR Busch Series Rookie of the Year, then won the Series in 2002. Biffle garnered national attention in 2024 for his work aiding relief efforts in western North Carolina in the aftermath of <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gyqII6-ArjQ&t=1s">Hurricane Helene</a>.

NASCAR said it was devastated by the news.

“Greg was more than a champion driver; he was a beloved member of the NASCAR community, a fierce competitor, and a friend to so many,” NASCAR said. “His passion for racing, his integrity, and his commitment to fans and fellow competitors alike made a lasting impact on the sport.”

Former NASCAR Driver <a href="https://x.com/Kenny_Wallace/status/2001724815141687594?s=20">Kenny Wallace</a> said on X that his former truck driver was on the plane.

"Craig Wadsworth drove of our motorhome for six years," Wallace wrote. "Our family is heart broke right now. He died on the airplane. I will be giving my thoughts at a later date."

NTD News reached out to the Statesville Regional Airport, Iredell County Sheriff Darren Campbell, the FAA, and the NTSB for comment.
