NEW YORK—The New York Fire Department (NYFD) is containing and cleaning a fuel oil spill in the cellar and sub-cellar of a hotel near Times Square.

Deputy Chief James Coyne of the NYFD told us that a fuel oil vendor spilled a portion of its product in the Knickerbocker Hotel’s cellar at approximately 8:30 a.m. on Aug. 2. Only the cellar and sub-cellar of the hotel were evacuated.

The NYFD’s HAZMAT special unit is cleaning the exposed areas, but it is unknown when the cleaning will be completed. There will be closures on W 42nd street until then.

Coyne said there is no indication of danger.
