G-7 leaders sign agreement on counterterrorism measures

G-7 nation leaders agreed on ways to tackle terrorism on May 26.

The agreement includes pushing tech companies, such as internet providers and social media platforms, to increase efforts against extremist content.

This comes days after a suicide bomber killed 22 people in the U.K. city of Manchester. It was the worst attack on Britain since 2005.

The leaders are meeting in Italy.

“So allow me to thank all the leaders, because I think we showed with this declaration our unity, our commitment, our determination to continue and strengthen our fight against terrorism. And after what happened a few days ago in Manchester, this is also a message of friendship and community with the UK,” said Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni.

British Prime Minister Theresa May thanked the other leaders for their support.

“Thank you Paolo and thank you to everybody sitting around this table for all the support that you have shown to the United Kingdom in the face of this absolutely horrific attack that took place. And I think it is important that as leaders we have shown our fierce determination to ensure that we use every tool available to us to fight against terrorism and protect our people,” she said.

Earlier during the G-7 session May said that countries should work with Britain on a series of steps to allow foreign fighters to be detained and brought to justice close to the countries where they had been operating.
