Ron Finley wants to save this community garden in South Central Los Angeles. He calls himself the “Gangsta Gardener.” He is trying to raise the $550,000 needed to keep the garden from property developers.

He has raised almost enough money through online crowdfunding.

Ron Finley talked about the purpose of the garden, “Basically what I do I like to say that I change cultures. That’s what we do in this garden, that’s what this garden is about, it’s about changing culture, you know and it’s inspiring people to at least grow some of their food and realize where we all come from and where we all go back to, where we turn to, the soil. You know to have an appreciation for the soil, to have an appreciation for mother earth and to have appreciation and a respect for yourself.”

The garden provides inspiration and an alternative to a lack of fresh food available in the community.
