Is genius really so rare?

Genius – an exceptional natural capacity of intellect, especially as shown in creative and original work in science, art or music. There have appeared several geniuses in the history of mankind, for example: Leonardo da Vinci, who created many inventions and works of art, Nikola Tesla, who is known for his contribution to the electric arts or Johann Sebastian Bach, who singly laid the foundation of European music and harmony.

But is the phenomenon of genius so rare that we can name only few people by this term? Isn’t it that many of us have the potential to attain the level of genius but we simply are not fortunate enough to develop our talents? Isn’t it like the famous thinker and inventor Buckminster Fuller said: “Everyone is born a genius, but the process of living de-geniuses them”?

I would argue yes, that is the case. We all have something special inside ourselves, a magic that just wants to get out and shine, but often these special abilities don’t garner enough attention and careful consideration from our environment. Look at this man in some distant rural area:

This example proves that creativity exists in all of us, we just need to create better conditions for it to thrive. Maybe the culprit lies in our grade-oriented schools that leave little space for pure, creative fun? Who knows? When we resolve this problem we shall unleash the true power of the human spirit and maybe one day we will enjoy a new renaissance, a new boom of geniuses on this Earth 🙂
