German prosecutors said on Thursday (February 23) that a 26-year-old German man suspected of preparing an act of violent subversion against the state had been detained.

Prosecutors said the man was suspected of intended murder and possessed chemicals that could be used to make explosives.

“He was poised to build an explosive bomb from chemicals he had produced himself. With this explosive device he wanted to ambush police officers or soldiers,” senior public prosecutor Bernd Kolkmeier said.
The suspect is believed to be part of the Salafist group, an ultra-conservative reform movement within Sunni Islam.
