German Chancellor Angela Merkel said during a visit to Washington on Friday (March 17) that she hoped trade talks between the European Union and the United States would resume.
Speaking during a news conference with President Donald Trump, Merkel said that both sides profit from trade agreements and that Germany supported fair trade.
Merkel and Trump also discussed the situation in Ukraine and Afghanistan, the chancellor told reporters, saying that Germany and the United States would work hand in hand in Afghanistan.
Asked to comment on Trump’s plans to build a wall at the border with Mexico, Merkel said that people smugglers must be stopped, “with the refugees in mind.”
