A supplier of Green Giant and Trader Joe’s vegetables announced a recall of some products due to potential listeria contamination.
Growers Express said that the Massachusetts Department of Health alerted the company to a sample that tested positive for listeria. The sample originated at the company’s Biddeford, Maine facility.
Bags of diced butternut squash, cauliflower “fried rice” blend, and zucchini noodles were among the recalled products.
The products were sold at Big Y Foods, Food Lion, Stop & Shop, and Trader Joe’s, among other stores. They were sold in dozens of states, including Connecticut, Kansas, Maryland, Missouri, and Pennsylvania.
“Listeria is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women,” the Food and Drug Administration noted in the recall alert.
There have been no reported illnesses as of yet.
Most of the affected products have a “best if used by” date of June 26 to June 29, 2019.
“The safety of our consumers is our first priority,” said Tom Byrne, president of Growers Express, in a statement. “We self-reported the need for this recall to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and stopped production immediately after being notified of a single positive sample by the Massachusetts Department of Health. We are deep sanitizing the entire facility and our line equipment, as well as conducting continued testing on top of our usual battery of sanitation and quality and safety tests before resuming production.”
