COLUMBIA, S.C. — A computer glitch mistakenly left some South Carolinians playing a holiday game with what looked like winning tickets, but yielded no payouts.
Computer vendor Intralot had a programming error on Christmas Day, according to the South Carolina Education Lottery. The problem meant that more people playing the Holiday Cash Add-A-Play terminal-generated game won the top prize of $500 than should have been allowed, officials said.
People holding winning tickets said that they got error messages when trying to claim their prizes. On Wednesday, some formed lines at lottery offices, looking for answers.

Lottery officials said that they were reviewing the problem and planned to make an announcement later in the week. No other games seemed to have been affected by the issues.
In the meantime, officials said that anyone who bought a Holiday Cash Add-A-Play ticket on Monday between 5:51 p.m. and 7:53 p.m. should hold onto it.
