Guatemala’s Fuego spit a column of ash 7 miles high and spewed lava down its slopes as it erupted at dawn on Friday, May 5. The ash fell more than 12 miles from the cone.
Nearby villages were placed on high alert.
The volcano is 30 miles southwest of the capital, Guatemala City.
