Much of Britain saw extreme heat Monday in the second day of a heat wave that saw record temperatures in Wales and the hottest day of the year in England. The high temperatures put pressure on Britain’s transport system and NHS, while dozens of schools closed or partially closed. The Met Office issued an red extreme heat warning for the two days from London and the South East up to York and Manchester—the first ever to be issued in the UK. Amber warnings are in place across England and Wales, and parts of Scotland. Temperatures are expected to peak on Tuesday afternoon, with temperatures forecast as high as 41 degrees.
