A hedgehog getting a belly rub will make you want to get a massage

What can you do to make your hedgehog happy? Well, at least for those hedgehogs who can tolerate lying on their backs for longer periods of time, although after treating him to this he probably won’t mind, a good belly rub may be a good idea and might even be all you need to see your hedgehog happy all day.

Hedgehogs have around 5,000 spines. Each of them serves the hedgehog for about a year, before the spine falls out and gets replaced with a new one.

Besides rolling together and using their muscles to erect their spines, these creatures also have a peculiar habit: they like to put foamy saliva onto their spines – especially when stimulated with some unique, strong odor. Scientists have yet to find out what hedgehogs do that for.

Most hedgehogs do not enjoy lying on their backs. Yet this hedgehog obviously has enough trust in her owner and really enjoys this lovely, soft belly rub. Just look at this little guys smile!
