A young couple was on their way to the hospital for a planned birth when they were involved in a serious crash. They lost their unborn baby boy.

Jessica Mitchell, 20, and Justin Mitchell, 23, from Wood County East Texas were excited to become a family of three.

The young couple has been together since ninth grade and were “over-the-moon excited to meet their brand new baby boy,” their family told KLTV.

That morning, the two set off for the hospital so that Jessica Mitchell could have labor induced.

However, along the way, Justin Mitchell had to swerve quickly to avoid a tree branch lying in the middle of the road.

They ended up crashing and sustaining serious injuries.

“That’s when we learned they had an accident, and it was pretty bad,” Jessica Mitchell’s adopted mother, Brenda Mize, told KLTV.

The Mitchells lay in the ditch for an hour until help finally arrived.

Jessica Mitchell was in surgery for four hours as she sustained a broken neck, among other injuries. Meanwhile, her husband “obtained a broken pelvis, he has a broke back, lower back,” Mize said.

“The baby didn’t make it,” Mize said. “They needed to do a c-section to assess Jessica’s injuries.”

“He looked like his mom and had his daddy’s nose,” Mize said. “We did get to hold him for a little while and spend time with him.”

The Mitchells named the boy Sebastian and spent some time with him before they were moved to the intensive care unit.

“It’s just a really hard situation, and these kids need love and prayer,” Mize added.

Mize said the family didn’t have any insurance. The community has already been responding to help them with a GoFundMe to help raise funds for medical expenses.

In a Facebook post, Jessica Mitchell thanked people for all their prayers and support.

“Thank y’all for the prayers! Every day we accomplished a little more,” she wrote. “We both have a LONG way to go but with y’all’s prayers and the Lord being on our side we got this! Please continue to pray for us we need them! Love each and every one of y’all!”

Jessica Mitchell also posted an update about how they’re doing.

“Thank y’all again for the continued prayers! Today they were able to get Justin into a recliner and wheeled him into my room to see me for a few minutes today (this being the first time in 6 days we have gotten to see each other in person!),” she wrote.

She also said the doctors are looking into having them discharged on the 27th, although they will still need to spend at least a week in rehab.

She ended the post with a positive note, writing, “Also Justin’s friend Nolan and his parents went to the wreck site and were walking it when they found Justin’s wedding ring that had fallen off during the wreck!! God continues to watch over us and show us he has a hand everyday! Thank you again for the prayers and support!”
