Let’s take a virtual trip to ancient Peru with these intense photos.
At first, these look like statues, but they’re actually sarcophagi. They’re in the Luya Province of Peru, 60 kilometers northeast of Chachapoyas.

Locals call the sarcophagi the “Purunmachos” and they’re located in the site called “Karajia.” They were thought to be ancient wise men.

Each one measures 2.5 meters in height. Each head is adorned with horns, and some with skulls.

They are around 600 years old, and weren’t discovered until 1984, when they were found by archaeologist Federico Kauffmann.
There were originally eight sarcophagi, but two were destroyed by natural causes.
Thankfully, the remote location of these sarcophagi has helped to prevent damage from human interaction.
