Hiking couple lost in Himalayas found after 47 days; one alive, one dead

A pair of hikers from Taiwan were found in a cave in the Himalayas on April 26. Sadly, only one was still alive.

Search teams had been looking for 21-year-old Liang Shengyue and his 18-year-old girlfriend Liu Chenjun for seven weeks, since the pair had stopped sending updates to their parents.

The pair headed out for several days of hiking in late February. They got caught in a snowstorm in early March and decided to shelter in a cliffside cave.

The pair only had 10 days’ worth of food with them.

Liu Chenjun apparently died only a few days before rescuers arrived.

Liang lost 70 pounds. His hair was infested with lice and he had maggots living in wounds on his feet. otherwise, his health was stable.

Mentally he was less stable, according to friends. The stress and the grief of losing his girlfriend were powerful shocks.
