A 74-year-old husband and 57-year-old wife are dead after being hit by a driver who fled the scene. The driver has since been arrested and will likely be charged with two counts of murder.

The two, who were on their nightly walk, were struck on Silver Bell Road in Eagan, Minnesota. Police received a call around 9:50 p.m. on Thursday. Police found the two in a parking lot, next to a business.

“They actually walk around this strip mall on a daily basis and this is totally unfortunate and preventable,” said Eagan Deputy Chief Roger New, Kare 11 reported.

The couple was transported to Regions Hospital where they were pronounced dead.

Witnesses provided them with a description of a vehicle that fled the scene. A vehicle matching the description was located at a nearby business on Highway 13 in Eagan around 11 p.m.

“There were obvious signs of damage to the vehicle that were consistent with being involved in a hit-and-run accident,” New said.

Police found a possible suspect, a 36-year-old man, at the AmericInn Hotel in Apple Valley. He was taken into custody around 5:06 a.m. on Friday.

The Dakota County Attorney’s Office says he will likely be charged with two counts of second-degree murder on Monday, according to Kare 11.

Police are not looking for any other suspects and say the incident appears to be random.
